Kinnaird College For Women: Office Of Research Innovation & Commercialization (ORIC), had organized one day Workshop on “Literary and Historical Approaches to Peace Studies.” This workshop was designed to provide a productive idea about the key concepts and issues in the field of ‘Peace Studies’, through a close reading of Naghuib Mahfouz’s prize winning novel The Journey of Ibn Fattouma (1993 edition, translated from Arabic). One of the aims was to think about what course curricula featuring peace studies might look like at Kinnaird.

A Training Workshop: “Application of Statistics in Biological Research”10th November 2018

WORKSHOP ORGANIZED BY BIOCHEMISTRY DEPARTMENT

The Biochemistry Department has organized one day workshop entitled ‘Application of Statistics in Biological Research: A Training Workshop’ on 10th November 2018. Mr Aasim Jajja, Statistical Officer, NHRC, PHRC Research Centre, Sheikh Zayed Hospital was the resource person and about 40 undergraduate and post graduate students attended the workshop. The objective of this workshop was to train the participants working in the field of biological research to apply statistical tools on their research data.

Moreover, to inculcate the application of statistical methods in the minds of young researchers, real research data was discussed as an example instead of hypothetical data. The workshop was focused on types and importance of variables and data sheet management in SPSS, Descriptive Statistics, Advanced Statistical Analysis and its presentation in research articles.

Servis Industries Limited – Site Visit

Office of Research Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC)-Kinnaird College for Women, in pursuance to develop linkages with the potential industrial sectors of Pakistan to bridge the gaps between academic research and industrial needs arranged industrial visit to Servis Industries Limited- Muridke.

Faculty members from the departments of Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, Fine Arts, Economics and Statistics visited the facility. Purpose of the visit was to visit the plant and assess the production process and look for the opportunities to collaborate with the Services group of Industries Limited with the Kinaird to conduct joint research projects etc., the main objective of the visit was to explore the sectors in which Kinnaird Faculty have their expertise so that potential Industry- Academia linkages can be develope

Annual Product Launch Event 29th Nov. 2018

Department of Food Science13ths and Human Nutrition in collaboration with Office of Research Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC)-Kinnaird College for Women, in pursuance to develop linkages with the potential industrial sectors of Pakistan to bridge the gaps between academic research and industrial needs invited the representatives from the industrial sectors to the Annual Product Launch Event held on November 29th, 2018 .The event was planned to showcase the “Innovative Products” developed by the students from the Food Sciences and Human Nutrition Department. The event provided the platform to the students/faculty to interact and explore the possibilities of joint working regarding food technology/product innovation with national and international food manufacturers/representatives.

Representatives from the Bayer-Pakistan, Mr. Azeem Khan Niazi attended the event and expressed the intent for future working, Ms. Zaryab Mehmood- Amal Academy Fellowship voiced that such kind of events should be arranged regularly to showcase the talent/potential budding from the Kinnaird.

Workshop on “Biosafety Training for Young Researchers”27th of October, 2018

The Biosafety Training for Young Researchers was held at Kinnaird College for Women, Lahore on Saturday, 27th of October, 2018, from 8.30am to 4 pm. It was organized by the Department of Biotechnology, Kinnaird College for Women, in collaboration with Pakistan Biological Safety Association (PBSA).

The training sessions were organized by keeping in view the increasing needs of the application of biosafety and the development of a biosafe culture. With every passing day, Pakistan is progressing into an era of scientific research, with much focus on biological research. Experimental work with infectious and disease causing agents is increasing many folds, and this has called for the need to implement biosafety techniques.

To conduct the workshop, twelve certified trainers from PBSA namely Mr. Zia Ashraf, Mr. Imran Khan Khatak, Ms. Sibgha Tayyab, Mr. Adeel Ahmad, Dr. Syyada Samra Jafri, Dr. Akhtar Nadhman, Mr. Sheraz Younas, Ms. Kiran Imtiaz, Ms. Kanza Batool, Ms. Naila Mahmood, Mr. Syed Ihsan Gillani, Mr. Muhammad Sohail, were invited as facilitators along with their esteemed coach, Dr. Adnan Arshad.

The Academic Dean, Dr. Shahnaz Chaudhry shared the importance of biosafety, and how the implementation of biosafety techniques at every stage of research and experimental work was crucial. Head of Biotechnology Department, Dr. Iram Anjum expressed her gratitude to the guests from PBSA, along with her gratefulness for being able to organize the workshop.

A pre-assessment quiz was conducted by the facilitators. The aim was to proof conscious incompetence of participants about Biosafety. The training took place in two sessions, lecture and technical sessions. The session was begun by Mr. Imran Khan Khatak delivered the first lecture on Introduction and the Four Primary Controls of Biosafety which was followed by the second lecture on Introduction and the Four Primary Controls of Biosecurity delivered by Ms. Sibgha Tayyab, third lecture by Mr. Zia Ashraf on Sterilization, Disinfection, Decontamination and Antisepsis and forth by Mr. Adeel Ahmad on the Lab Acquired Infections.

Four practical stations were set up by the organizing team, which were being visited by the four subgroups, each on its own turn.  The first station was focused on hand washing techniques, led by Ms. Naila Mahmood and Ms. Kanza Batool. The second station focused on beaking method of glove removal and bootie dance, led by Dr. Syyada Samra Jafri and Mr. Syed Ihsan Gillani. The third station focused on spill management techniques, led by Ms. Kiran Imtiaz and Mr. Muhammad Sohail. The fourth station was led by Dr. Akhtar Nadhman and Mr. Sheraz Younas, focusing on waste management. After the lunch break, groups were rotated.

With completion of both the rounds of the practical and lecture sessions, post assessment quiz was conducted. The knowledge gained by the students during the course of the workshop was assessed and evaluated, in order to make students consciously competent of their knowledge in biosafety.

For concluding the workshop, the vice principal of Kinnaird, Dr. Nikghat Khan was invited on the stage where she expressed her gratitude to the guests, and pride for the Department of Biotechnology for organizing this workshop. On the basis of this workshop she expressed her desire to start a full biosafety course in department. Certificates were distributed and among students and souvenirs among facilitators.  Extremely positive feedback was given by the students, who were glad to have participated in the workshop. They were confident about the skills they had learnt during the course of the workshop, and were certain to implement them in their experimental and research work, in order to develop and maintain a fully biosafe culture.

Workshop on “Protein Modeling and Computer Aided Drug Designing”28th – 29th September, 2018

Two day Workshop of “Protein Modeling and Computer Aided Drug Designing” was organized by Department of Biotechnology, Kinnaird College for Women Lahore on 28th– 29th September, 2018, from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm. The training was organized by keeping in view the increasing needs of the application of bioinformatics research in Biological sciences. With every passing day, Pakistan is progressing into an era of scientific research, with much focus on biological research. Computational research reduces time and money.

Dr. Syyada Samra Jafri who is Assistant Professor at Department of Biotechnology, Kinnaird College for Women Lahore, started the first day session of in silico training. She taught the basics of Protein Modeling and helped students to prepare files required for second day session. A guest trainer, Dr. Masaud Shah who is Assistant Professor at Molecular Science and Technology, Ajou University, Seol, South Korea went for second day session of Computer Aided Drug Designing. He explained in detail about the need and importance of drug designing and trained every student in drug designing by assigning tasks. He explained in detail how to prepare molecules for drug designing and how to find appropriate drugs among reported drugs for a specific protein.

Fifty students of MPhil and BS 8th semester from Department of Biotechnology, Kinnaird College for Women Lahore participated very actively in the workshop.

For concluding the workshop, Head of Department of Department of Biotechnology, Kinnaird College for Women, Dr. Iram Anjum was invited on the stage where she expressed her gratitude to the guest, and pride for the Department of Biotechnology for organizing this workshop. On the basis of this workshop she expressed her views about the importance of Bioinformatics training for young researchers.  Extremely positive feedback was given by the students, who were glad to have participated in the workshop. They were confident about the skills they had learnt during the course of the workshop, and were certain to implement them in their experimental and research work.

Role of the Activity in Student’s Development:

Students of Zoology Department arranged a ‘Dental health and Oral hygiene’ camp through which different students could know their dental and oral health conditions. During the interactive session, it was ensured that students know how to maintain dental health.

Summary of the talk:

The basic purpose of arranging this interactive session was to enlighten students with the signs and symptoms of epilepsy. The more everyone talks about epilepsy, the less people living with the condition must fear discrimination, worry about receiving improper first aid, or keep their epilepsy hidden in the shadows. The goal was to educate everyone about what a seizure looks like and what to do if a person is having a seizure.

Role of the activity in student development:

It was made sure that students know how to deal with the patients of epilepsy and know the extent of their treatment options.

Summary of the talk:

The main purpose of the talk was to teach students basics of documentary making. The use of equipment and the angles to be taken while filming was explained. The critical analysis of already made documentaries given by students was also done. Both good points and bad points were highlighted. A tutorial on choice of subject and the information provided through it was also given.

Role of the activity in student development:

The Zoology students study the course of “Ornithology and Herpetology” for which the final project of documentary making is assigned. The choice of subject and animal depends upon the student and its resources. This workshop helped students in learning how to make a good documentary with a low budget and good resolution and narration.

Participation in National Police Summit & Innovation Expo 12th March 2018
PARTICIPATION IN NATIONAL POLICE SUMMIT & INNOVATION EXPO-12th March 2018
 
National Police Summit & Innovation Expo was an initiative of ministry of interior in order to enhance police performance and to provide motivation to the most important department for law enforcement. The purpose of the event was to provide an opportunity to young learners and academicians to present innovative ideas for police performance enhancement. Kinnaird College for Women sent 3 proposals written by Ms. Aminah Gilani, Ms. Tabita Victor & Ms. Dure Shahwar from the Department of Political Science. The topics of the project were”Establishment of Crowd-Management Department in Police”, “Impact of creating front desk to refine the Thanaa culture in Punjab”, Experimentation & Innovation in Police Department”. Three faculty members were shortlisted by HEC  among various national universities who sent their proposals/projects for innovation in Police Department, to deliver video conference presentation on 12th March. The kinnaird Faculty also presented their projects at the Innovation Expo held on 14th March, Jinnah Convention Centre Islamabad  along with other universities. The Kinnaird Faculty Project Diplay Kiosk was visited by several officials from FIA, Punjab Safe City Authorities, Punjab Police Authorities, Army Officials & other Non-governmental Organizations. The presentations were appreciated by the stake holders from law enforcement departments showed interest in collaborating with Kinnaird College for research and learning purposes in future.
