Office of Research Innovation and Commercialization (ORIC) organized one Day Workshop entitled “Innovation & Entrepreneurship for Sustainable Economic Growth” On 21st August 2019 at Hladia Hall, Kinnaird College for Women, Lahore. Mr Mike Litman, founder of Mikes International and Dr. Muhammad Shehryar Shahid, Assistant Professor of Entrepreneurship at Suleman Dawood School of Business at LUMS were the key resource persons who engaged the audience through their interactive delivery style. The objective of the workshop was to underscore the importance and practicality of innovation and entrepreneurship for economic growth. Innovation is the need of the hour. It is needed in every field. In the rapidly changing world, innovation is the only key to Sustainable development.

Emphasizing the importance of social entrepreneurship especially in this region, Mr. Litman shared examples of two esteemed ladies.  Firstly, Dr Ruth Pfau moved from Germany to Pakistan and devoted more than 55 years of her life fighting leprosy in Pakistan and secondly Marie Curie who throughout her life actively promoted the use of radium to alleviate suffering. One of the important lessons which can be drawn from his talk is that in order to become successful in one’s life one should clearly know what one really wants to be and what steps are to be taken to achieve those goals.

Throwing light on what sets apart an entrepreneur from other people, Dr. Muhammad Shehryar Shahid explained that entrepreneurs are ordinary people but with a different mindset .They spot an unfulfilled need of the people and conceive an innovative way to serve that need. Moreover, he explained that entrepreneurs don’t work with pre-defined goals rather they achieve their ends by exploring their means.

Overall, participants deemed the workshop as a good learning experience and ask that such events should be organized to promote innovative entrepreneurial ventures for sustainable economic development of the country.
